Last Week at the National Zoo (Richard)

I can't believe that the internship is already over! This has been such an awesome experience and I am really sad that it has to end. But this last week was a good note to leave off on.

During the beginning of the week, I worked on the creating guides for families whose children want to participate in nature play. One of our goals here is to ensure that children grow up with an appreciation for nature and we try to do this by getting them to play outside. Nature play is any activity or game that involves using natural materials and plants, whether it be leaf rubbings, scavenger hunts, etc. So I worked on creating guides for families that would help them know what kind of activities they can complete with their children.

I also prepared a lot for the facebook live broadcast that took place this week. It was on orangutans, and we did a craft where we created little pipe-cleaner orangutans that could hang on a pencil. We then ended the broadcast by playing a game that taught the audience about deforestation for the extraction of palm oil and its effects on the natural environment of orangutans. So tip for you all, when buying your groceries, check to see that what you buy uses sustainable-grown palm oil to avoid the destruction of forests in Borneo and Sumatra any further.

I then continued to take pictures of interpreter items and uploaded them to their online training site. I loved doing this because I got to handle some awesome materials such as animal pelts, skulls, claws, and more.
And to end off the week, I got to see a behind-the-scenes tour of the seal and sea-lion exhibit and how they filter the water. It was amazing to see the engineering perspective of what goes behind a zoo and it took a lot of work. They create their own ozone (O3) to filter some of the water and the backwash goes through an entire process to be cleaned again. It was incredible to see some of the machinery and the work that they did.

I am so thankful to YAP, my supervisor, and my team for making this internship experience incredible. It seems like this wouldn't fit my interests because I am looking into engineering, but having done this internship and program gave me such a rich and valuable perspective that I could not have gained anywhere else. I know that having this new perspective will help me and others down the line and will add to whatever engineering field I go into. I have learned so many new skills and for that I am extremely grateful. YAP and this internship has truly changed my life.
