Week 3
By this time, I have acclimated to life as part of the museum. I know most of the staff and most of the staff know me. This week I achieved new insights into the what a work culture is like, and have learned very valuable lessons that will surely help me in any future positions in my professional career. In terms of the history of crime research, I have dived into a completely different level of archival investigation as can be seen in the picture above. I had the opportunity to meet with the Gallery Exhibition team and have begun reading several books on museum exhibition and related topics such as Teaching by Design. Last but not least, I experienced my first, but hopefully not last, Family Fun Day. In the HistoryMiami Museum, this day serves as an interactive family-centered day where kids get to interact with creative and fun activities, while the parents have a wonderful bonding experience with their kids.
Moreover, my time in the archives has served as a versatile learning experience that I will be sure to apply in further research down the road. In the picture above displaying my investigation, I was researching the riots and chaos following the case of Arthur McDuffie in the 1980s here in South Florida. I also did this sort of in-depth researching on the infamous Al Capone.
Besides my research, I have gotten more knowledgeable in the actual layout and principles that dwell in museum settings. In my meeting with the Gallery Exhibition team, I got to ask about the inner workings of the museum to a very specific perspective. Since my time in the museum has largely been in the Education Department, seeing a different perspective on the museum, its mission, where it is at, and its impact to the public, has made me realize the little I actually know about what it takes to run and operate an institution such as this.
Furthermore, Family Fun Day served as practice for the Smithsonian reading assignment. As seen in the picture above, I was able to direct a reading session to understand the flow of reading to kids. My supervisor advised that doing so would prepare me for when I actually read at the library. I shadowed the person who usually does reading time, it was very helpful to experience the what atmosphere you need to set up and how to manage kids’ attention span.

Overall, this has been another eye-opening week full of knowledge that will aid me in the future.
