Week 2 at National Zoological Park (Richard)
This second week at the National Zoological has been super fun! My tasks have begun to narrow and now I am more focused on planning and creating certain outreach events. But that doesn’t mean I still don’t get to see some of the work the zoo does with the animals!
I kicked off the week doing some Panda behavior watch which was super cool! These pandas have things known as pseudo-pregnancies which means that they think they are pregnant even when they are not. While this may not seem like a serious issue, it can have serious impacts on older pandas. So our job was to watch the panda for a few hours and record her activity every five minutes and record if the panda did anything that a pregnant panda would. I then was able to complete a photoshop crash-course in case they ever need me to design or update a flyer.
Then throughout the rest of the week it was more planning for outreach events! I got to plan for the facebook live broadcast we did this week and I even got to be in it which was incredibly fun! The broadcast this week was on meerkats, so the day before I had to study up and then on the day of I got to do a craft on camera. So if you all want to check that out, you can go to the Smithsonian National Zoological Park’s facebook page and the video should be right there. I should be in the next two broadcasts as well so tune in to those too if you can!
This week was also the first time I got to read to children for storytime. While I didn’t do it at a public library, I was able to gather up around 15 kids at the zoo. It was a lot of fun reading in front of the cows and alpaca at the kids farm exhibit of the zoo. I read two books both in english and spanish and the kids seemed very interested the entire time until the zookeeper began to feed the cows and then all the kids left in a matter of seconds. But I have never interacting with a group of toddlers before this week, and it was a good feeling to learn something new and entertain the kids.
Then I ended the week designing some flyers and activities for kids this weekend. They will be doing a little scavenger hunt for common nature items such as pinecones, leaves, and sticks. I can't wait for next week to continue my work with the National Zoological Park!
