Third Week at Explora! - Marilyn Upchurch
This week at Explora I was trying new things. That seems to be a theme for me during my internship, trying new things, exploring, etc. This week I realized how much I love working in the classroom setting.
On Monday I helped with two camps. Again, camps at Explora are classes parents can sign their kids up for to learn a certain fun subject. I helped with a class called "Amazing Shapes." This class is to show kids the importance of shapes in everyday life. Look up from your computer screen right now and look around the room. Do you notice different shapes? The door is a rectangle, the fan is a circle, the light switch is probably a square. Pretty interesting when you think about how our world is shaped using shapes. After that camp I helped in another camp called "Mysterious Matter," which was all about solids, liquids, and gases!
Tuesday I was helping in the same classes. Unlike outreaches and tour groups, I am able to get to know the kids in the classroom setting better. I also get to see how much they grow in the week because some may have been quiet in the beginning of the week and missing their parents, but by the end of the week they gained new friends and new knowledge.
Wednesday I went on another outreach to a pre k school. They were so cute! We brought a program called fun with bubbles. The educator and I were a bit nervous at first because we were scared that the kids wouldn't be able to blow bubbles, but soon realized that with a little practice they were practically pros. We also read books to them, made bubble wands, painted with bubbles, and other little activities. When I got back to the museum I helped in a camp that was basically a cooking class. We made pancakes, Oobleck (goo from the Dr.Seuss book), and tested acids and bases.
Thursday I helped in the same camps from Monday again. In "Amazing Shapes," the kids did different activities including cutting paper and folding paper to see different shapes. After that I helped with the camp called "Mysterious Matter."
Friday I helped in the Pre-K camp that is also a cooking class. Let me tell you, it was adorable seeing these little ones cooking like pros. They helped cut vegetables (with plastic knives) that we put in our "Rainbow Salsa." Seeing this brought me back to Washington Week when my group and I made the Pico De Gallo in our cooking class! They also did different activities like painting, making green spaghetti, and putting vinegar in baking soda. The kids seemed to love this class and so did I.
So basically what was my job this week? Assisting the teacher, cleaning up, and getting things ready for class. It was very fun and I'm glad I could help.
