Frost Science Museum: Week 1

I used to think I was good with kids, but this week was certainly a challenge.  As a counselor for the museum's children's camp, I was in charge of making sure the 4th and 5th graders behaved and that the environment was safe and focused for them to learn about this weeks theme: Poison.

However, I learned so much about what it takes to create and run programs like this for the kids.  Scheduling the different activities, making sure the kids didn't run off and get lost, and even tolerating an unhealthy amount of Kidz Bop.  Even though there were so many different staffers that had different jobs, the first thing my supervisor told me was that everyone would just chip in to help with whatever they could and indeed, that's what happened but it also helped us gain a greater understanding of everyone's jobs and helped us work better as a team.

Even though I'm going to college in the Fall, I learned so much from the lessons provided for the kids.  They are actually so much smarter than I remember being in elementary school and it makes me feel so bad!  The first time I interacted with the children, they were having a discussion about dark energy in the universe.  They also knew the different kinds of neurotoxins before it was even taught!  This means it is a challenge to find material for the children that is both challenging for the kids but also entertaining which they somehow managed to do through lots of interactive lessons and hands-on activities.

This past week was an enlightening experience albeit exhausting, but next week I'll be with the 2nd and 3rd graders which are apparently even more of a handful so I'll see how well I can handle the new challenge.
