Fort Worth Museum of Science and History: Week 01

Wow, I can't believe that my first week serving as a Young Ambassador at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History has flown by! This week has been packed with lots of hands-on experience with guests and opportunities to learn from fellow co-workers and local college interns spending their summer with us. As a current employee and previous Teen Tech intern at this location, I was fortunate enough to know almost all of the in's and out's of the museum. This knowledge made it easier for me to adjust and become comfortable to my new assignments.

My project for the week was to familiarize myself with the new activities we have in our Innovation Studios exhibit floor, which included sky spinners and rods + rubber bands. As well as, interacting with guests through table top demos. I discovered that these activities were enhanced when the material or concept could be relatable to guests. For example when preparing our sky spinners for take off asking younger guests, "What are some things that you know fly high?" Usually the answers included: airplanes, birds, and bugs; this built up some excitement and joy when watching their sky spinners soar high. Another interesting thing I noticed is how guest observation of their project influenced what they did next time. For example, folding the ears differently, adding more or taking away foam weights, holding it differently inside of the wind tunnel. It reminded me of how I usually learn things by trial and error and eventually find an effective method.

The rods + rubber bands activity was probably my favorite! After a couple days of practice my co-worker Sarah and I, with the help of a couple of museum guests, were able to build our own Yurt! It took a couple of build and take apart moments and a few snapped rubber bands, but we did it and it was very sturdy! This week has definitely been super fun and I can't wait to see what next week brings!

Hasta luego familia!

Unfortunately I couldn't snap a picture with our Yurt building team, but here is the finished structure!
