Arte Américas - Week 1

Here at Arte Américas, we are getting ready for our next exhibit! The museum is closed for the month of July so that the staff can take out the old exhibits and prepare for a new one. An empty museum may seem like a pretty boring place, but it has been a very exciting first week and it has actually been quite busy. It is fascinating to get a behind the scenes look at the amount of dedication and work it takes to prepare for a new exhibit. I have been assigned many tasks this week such as taking in new, donated inventory and even helping with research for the new exhibit.

Pictured above are a few pieces that were donated to Arte Américas; this same donor has already donated more than 200 pieces including little sculptures, toys, paintings, photos, etc.
This week my biggest task was to record this new inventory and get each piece's value to put on a spreadsheet because some of the items would be sold in the "tiendita." Other smaller tasks included putting away or organizing inventory and filing books and magazines in the museum's library.

This week I was also able to do some history research on the Salvadoran Civil War, which plagued the 80's and went on until 1992. My advisor thought this research would be good for me because it is the war that made my mother flee El Salvador for a better life in America and it would be a great contribution to the new history exhibit that the museum plans to have in the future.
Overall, this week has made me extremely grateful for the opportunity to work in a small, but wonderful museum and has made me very excited for the upcoming weeks. ¡Hasta luego!
